Community Health Nursing: Population and Prevention Foundations
Community health nursing focuses on populations, families, prevention, health promotion, surveillance, education, and the social conditions that influence health.
Levels of Prevention
Primary prevention aims to prevent disease before it occurs. Secondary prevention focuses on early detection. Tertiary prevention reduces complications and supports rehabilitation.
Community Assessment
Consider demographics, disease patterns, maternal-child indicators, environmental risks, sanitation, nutrition, access to care, health literacy, housing, education, employment, and cultural factors.
Health Education
Effective education uses clear language, relevant examples, teach-back, culturally appropriate communication, and realistic actions.
Communicable Disease Control
Public-health responses may include surveillance, case identification, contact tracing, vaccination, infection prevention, reporting, and outbreak control according to local regulations.
Maternal and Child Health
Community nurses support antenatal care, immunization, nutrition, breastfeeding, growth monitoring, family planning information, and referral for risk conditions.
Social Determinants
Health outcomes are influenced by income, education, housing, transport, food security, working conditions, social support, and access to services.
