BS Nursing Semester 2 — Core Patient Care and Nursing Reasoning | HEC 2024 Study Guide

Study the official subject sequence, learn why each course matters, and move directly to relevant notes and exam practice.

Semester 2 of the 2024 Higher Education Commission (Pakistan) Bachelor of Science in Nursing curriculum includes 6 courses and 16 credits. This original learning companion provides the official course sequence, an interpretation of the main concepts, questions for self-study, clinical safety reminders and links to related published nursing notes. It is intended to help students plan learning, not to replace course textbooks, local practical requirements or a lecturer.

This semester’s purpose

This semester strengthens safe, person-centred foundational care. Students move from knowing the steps of a procedure to understanding why an observation matters, what the result means, and how the care plan should change after evaluation.

Quality status: Semester titles and credits checked against HEC (2024); teaching text prepared for Faizan’s academic review, not yet clinically peer-reviewed.

Subject-by-subject student guide

Work through each course using three passes: first build the conceptual framework, then apply the idea to a realistic example, and finally answer a question without referring to the text.

SUBJECT 1 · 4 CREDITS

Fundamentals of Nursing – II

This course develops assessment, safe fundamental psychomotor skills, observation trends and the nursing process. Focus on patient identification, consent, dignity, moving and handling, personal hygiene, comfort and accurate reporting. After care, ask what objective evidence can show that it helped.

Essential learning checklist

Self-test and reasoning

Try this: What reassessment and documentation would be needed after assisting a patient with a change in mobility?

SUBJECT 2 · 3 CREDITS

Quantitative Reasoning – I

Practise proportional reasoning, metric conversion, percentages and reading graphs. Write units next to each numerical quantity; then confirm the result by checking its order of magnitude. Nursing uses calculations in high-risk contexts, so classroom skill-building must be distinguished from independently performing clinical medication calculations.

Essential learning checklist

fractions and percentagesratios and proportionsmetric conversionsgraphs and tablesestimating reasonable results

Self-test and reasoning

Try this: How does checking the units expose an answer that is numerically plausible but clinically nonsensical?

SUBJECT 3 · 3 CREDITS

Anatomy & Physiology – II

Connect the respiratory, renal, nervous, sensory, endocrine and reproductive systems to observable body function. Map how ventilation and circulation support oxygen delivery, how kidneys regulate fluid composition, and how hormonal feedback maintains homeostasis. Study the difference between organ structure and physiological mechanism.

Self-test and reasoning

Try this: How can impaired renal function influence more than one electrolyte measurement?

SUBJECT 4 · 2 CREDITS

Applied Nutrition

Understand macronutrients, micronutrients, hydration and nutrition across the life course. Avoid treating body weight as a complete indicator of nutritional status. Study screening, dietary access, cultural preferences and referral to an appropriately qualified professional when a patient requires individual dietary management.

Essential learning checklist

Self-test and reasoning

Try this: What personal and medical information is needed before giving dietary advice to an older adult who eats very little?

SUBJECT 5 · 2 CREDITS

Theoretical Basis of Nursing

Use nursing frameworks to structure assessments and care rather than memorising names. Compare environmental, adaptation, caring, interpersonal and self-care models. Explain how the theory chosen changes the questions a nurse asks and how a patient’s independence, relationships and circumstances are recognised.

Self-test and reasoning

Try this: How might a self-care framework and a relationship-based framework complement each other in discharge planning?

SUBJECT 6 · 2 CREDITS

Islamic Studies / Ethics

This course represents the HEC option of Islamic Studies or Ethics. Review your institution’s specific approved outline. Whichever pathway you follow, distinguish personal values from professional responsibility, and practise respectful communication, fairness and confidentiality with patients holding diverse perspectives.

Essential learning checklist

ethical reasoningresponsibility and justicerespect for beliefsconfidentialityprofessional conduct

Self-test and reasoning

Try this: What would respectful care look like when a patient’s expressed beliefs differ from your own?

Integrated clinical reasoning case

Practice scenario

A patient becomes dizzy when moving from bed to standing. How would you collect a relevant history, recheck observations, consider fall risk, communicate the change and document what happened without performing an unsupervised intervention?

Suggested answer structure

State the important observations and what is different from the patient’s baseline. Identify data that are still missing, relevant safety concerns and what should be communicated to the qualified team. Separate information gathering from prescribing or independently performing clinical treatments. End with an objective handover and documentation plan.

How to revise for examinations

Seven-day topic rotation

Day Active learning assignment Evidence of understanding
Day 1 Study Fundamentals of Nursing – II, make a one-page concept map, then explain the material aloud without notes. One short explanation, labelled diagram or scenario response.
Day 2 Study Quantitative Reasoning – I, make a one-page concept map, then explain the material aloud without notes. One short explanation, labelled diagram or scenario response.
Day 3 Study Anatomy & Physiology – II, make a one-page concept map, then explain the material aloud without notes. One short explanation, labelled diagram or scenario response.
Day 4 Study Applied Nutrition, make a one-page concept map, then explain the material aloud without notes. One short explanation, labelled diagram or scenario response.
Day 5 Study Theoretical Basis of Nursing, make a one-page concept map, then explain the material aloud without notes. One short explanation, labelled diagram or scenario response.
Day 6 Study Islamic Studies / Ethics, make a one-page concept map, then explain the material aloud without notes. One short explanation, labelled diagram or scenario response.
Day 7 Review all subjects. Answer self-check questions in random order and revisit incorrect answers. List weak topics and schedule the next recall session.

Use this revision checklist

  1. Can you define the core ideas in plain language?
  2. Can you show how evidence supports a nursing observation or teaching point?
  3. Can you recognise when a situation needs supervision or escalation?
  4. Can you communicate a concern without inventing a diagnosis or missing key context?
  5. Can you answer related practice MCQs and explain why incorrect options are incorrect?
Clinical caution

Learning material is for nursing education. Patient assessment, medication administration, emergency actions and invasive procedures require authorised supervision and current institutional protocols. Never interpret this overview as a bedside clinical order. Clinical precautions are placed inside this guide, not as discouraging alerts on its listing card.
