BS Nursing Semester 5 — Paediatric, Maternal and Public Health Foundations | HEC 2024 Study Guide

Study the official subject sequence, learn why each course matters, and move directly to relevant notes and exam practice.

This 16-credit, 5-subject study guide follows the 2024 Higher Education Commission BS Nursing curriculum for Pakistan. It explains what to study, how the subjects relate to practical nursing and how to revise. It is a student companion and not a substitute for university lectures, current policies or supervised clinical training.

Learning direction

The emphasis shifts to infants, children, families, maternity care and disease prevention. Students need developmentally appropriate assessment, family-centred communication and an understanding of infection transmission and population measures.

Review status: Course sequence verified against the HEC curriculum; explanation and study examples prepared for academic checking by Faizan, BS Nursing.

Detailed subject learning plan

For each subject, understand the theory first, turn it into a small case-based question, and test whether you can explain the rationale without copying the notes.

COURSE 1 · 2 CREDITS

Civics and Community Engagement

Learn how local institutions, civic participation, social conditions and community trust influence access to health services. Use community listening and inclusive language before developing an outreach programme.

What to learn

citizenship and responsibilitycommunity participationhealth equitylocal organisationspublic engagement

Check your reasoning

How can you discover a community’s concerns before choosing the content of a health campaign?

COURSE 2 · 7 CREDITS

Pediatric Health Nursing

Study growth and development alongside common paediatric health problems, nutrition, hydration, safe observation and caregiver partnership. Children should never be assessed solely against adult physiological expectations. Practice requires paediatric protocols and supervision.

What to learn

Check your reasoning

Why is a reference range for an adult inappropriate when assessing an infant?

COURSE 3 · 3 CREDITS

Maternal, Neonatal and Child Health Nursing

Review pregnancy-to-postnatal continuity, respectful maternity services, newborn adaptation, feeding education and recognition of changing maternal or newborn wellbeing. Build trust and communicate concerns using language that does not blame patients.

What to learn

postnatal assessmentnewborn adaptationfeeding supportfamily educationrecognition of maternal warning signs

Check your reasoning

How could you invite a parent to describe feeding problems and ensure concerns receive appropriate review?

COURSE 4 · 2 CREDITS

Epidemiology

Learn incidence, prevalence, health rates, surveillance, risk factors, study design and bias. Recognise that the number of people affected must be interpreted in relation to population size and time. Association alone does not prove causation.

What to learn

incidence and prevalencerates and denominatorsobservational designsoutbreak investigationbias and confounding

Check your reasoning

Why can raw case counts be misleading when two populations have very different sizes?

COURSE 5 · 2 CREDITS

Infectious Diseases

Apply infection transmission principles, Standard Precautions, vaccination concepts, environmental cleaning and antimicrobial stewardship. Understand that local disease-specific isolation measures supplement precautions used for all patient care.

What to learn

Check your reasoning

Why is hand hygiene necessary even when gloves are used?

Integrated student case

Case for discussion

A young child is feeding poorly, appears less active, and the caregiver is worried. What age-specific history, observations and warning signs should prompt senior assessment?

Suggested reasoning method

Start with accurate observations and patient-reported information. Compare with earlier status, identify essential missing data, consider patient dignity and immediate safety, and determine what requires a qualified clinician’s review. Use the local escalation pathway and document the information clearly. This is a discussion exercise, not authority to diagnose or treat.

Revision timetable

Day Focused study Self-assessment
Day 1 Study Civics and Community Engagement; draw a concept map, recall the essentials and explain a simulated example. Write one short answer or scenario question with a reasoned explanation.
Day 2 Study Pediatric Health Nursing; draw a concept map, recall the essentials and explain a simulated example. Write one short answer or scenario question with a reasoned explanation.
Day 3 Study Maternal, Neonatal and Child Health Nursing; draw a concept map, recall the essentials and explain a simulated example. Write one short answer or scenario question with a reasoned explanation.
Day 4 Study Epidemiology; draw a concept map, recall the essentials and explain a simulated example. Write one short answer or scenario question with a reasoned explanation.
Day 5 Study Infectious Diseases; draw a concept map, recall the essentials and explain a simulated example. Write one short answer or scenario question with a reasoned explanation.
Day 6 Study Civics and Community Engagement; draw a concept map, recall the essentials and explain a simulated example. Write one short answer or scenario question with a reasoned explanation.
Day 7 Mix all subject areas, review incorrect answers and create a plan for weak topics. Record learning gaps and the next revision date.

Clinical caution and responsible learning

Patient safety: Learners must check all practical activities with qualified supervisors. A teaching example is not a prescription. For deterioration, medications, invasive procedures, child safeguarding or psychiatric risks, use the latest local guidance and professional escalation pathways.
