BS Nursing Semester 7 — Critical Care, Leadership and Research | HEC 2024 Study Guide

Study the official subject sequence, learn why each course matters, and move directly to relevant notes and exam practice.

This 17-credit, 5-subject study guide follows the 2024 Higher Education Commission BS Nursing curriculum for Pakistan. It explains what to study, how the subjects relate to practical nursing and how to revise. It is a student companion and not a substitute for university lectures, current policies or supervised clinical training.

Learning direction

In Semester 7, students develop their judgement about acute deterioration, scope of practice, multidisciplinary communication and evidence. Supervised critical-care learning is a major part of the 17-credit curriculum.

Review status: Course sequence verified against the HEC curriculum; explanation and study examples prepared for academic checking by Faizan, BS Nursing.

Detailed subject learning plan

For each subject, understand the theory first, turn it into a small case-based question, and test whether you can explain the rationale without copying the notes.

COURSE 1 · 3 CREDITS

Leadership & Management

Study delegation, supervision, patient safety culture, workload prioritisation and quality improvement. A leader needs to understand the difference between sharing a task and transferring accountability, and should respond transparently to errors.

What to learn

Check your reasoning

What checks are required before asking another team member to undertake a clinical task?

COURSE 2 · 7 CREDITS

Critical Care Nursing

Study systematic observation and response to deterioration in supervised high-acuity settings. Prioritise trend recognition, oxygenation and perfusion concepts, neurological monitoring, device safety and timely team communication. Procedures and emergencies must follow local protocols and licensed supervision.

Check your reasoning

Why can a change from baseline require escalation even before a diagnosis is known?

COURSE 3 · 3 CREDITS

Introduction to Nursing Research

Develop a clear research question, search credible literature and distinguish qualitative and quantitative methods. Study sampling, informed consent, bias, ethics and the limitations of interpreting a single result.

What to learn

Check your reasoning

Could an uncontrolled study establish that a new nursing procedure caused better outcomes? Explain why not.

COURSE 4 · 2 CREDITS

Entrepreneurship

Explore problem validation, patient needs, service design, sustainability, professional regulation and responsible handling of data. In healthcare, marketing claims and digital functionality must not outrun evidence and safety protections.

Check your reasoning

What checks are needed before testing a digital tool with identifiable patient information?

COURSE 5 · 2 CREDITS

Elective (Institution-Approved)

The HEC 2024 scheme specifies a two-credit elective, but the course is chosen by the awarding institution. Consult the correct university guide for content, reading lists, competencies and requirements instead of relying on a guessed elective title.

Integrated student case

Case for discussion

During a simulation, an adult patient’s respiratory rate and level of consciousness change. What observations should be checked, what must be escalated urgently and how should the response be documented?

Suggested reasoning method

Start with accurate observations and patient-reported information. Compare with earlier status, identify essential missing data, consider patient dignity and immediate safety, and determine what requires a qualified clinician’s review. Use the local escalation pathway and document the information clearly. This is a discussion exercise, not authority to diagnose or treat.

Revision timetable

Day Focused study Self-assessment
Day 1 Study Leadership & Management; draw a concept map, recall the essentials and explain a simulated example. Write one short answer or scenario question with a reasoned explanation.
Day 2 Study Critical Care Nursing; draw a concept map, recall the essentials and explain a simulated example. Write one short answer or scenario question with a reasoned explanation.
Day 3 Study Introduction to Nursing Research; draw a concept map, recall the essentials and explain a simulated example. Write one short answer or scenario question with a reasoned explanation.
Day 4 Study Entrepreneurship; draw a concept map, recall the essentials and explain a simulated example. Write one short answer or scenario question with a reasoned explanation.
Day 5 Study Elective (Institution-Approved); draw a concept map, recall the essentials and explain a simulated example. Write one short answer or scenario question with a reasoned explanation.
Day 6 Study Leadership & Management; draw a concept map, recall the essentials and explain a simulated example. Write one short answer or scenario question with a reasoned explanation.
Day 7 Mix all subject areas, review incorrect answers and create a plan for weak topics. Record learning gaps and the next revision date.

Clinical caution and responsible learning

Patient safety: Learners must check all practical activities with qualified supervisors. A teaching example is not a prescription. For deterioration, medications, invasive procedures, child safeguarding or psychiatric risks, use the latest local guidance and professional escalation pathways.
