UK NMC Preparation: Registration, CBT and OSCE

Plan your UK nursing registration with independent guides to English-language evidence, CBT, OSCE, the NMC Code and revalidation.

Independent educational resource: This is not an NMC website or a clinical training accreditation provider. Regulatory requirements must be checked on the official NMC site. Clinical procedures must be learned in a supervised training environment. Practice Mode question banks are separate and may not yet cover every page.

Preparing to join the UK nursing register? Start with the registration route, check which English-language evidence applies to you, then plan your CBT and OSCE preparation. Already registered? Use the Code and revalidation guides to connect professional standards with everyday practice.

Choose your next step: overseas registration, English-language evidence, or OSCE preparation materials.

How to use this library: Choose a topic, learn the background and limitations, study the comparison table and flowchart, then apply the clinical case. Practice questions are kept exclusively in Practice Mode and not embedded inside articles.

Preparing for the UK nursing OSCE? Start with our NMC OSCE preparation guide, then open the free interactive OSCE learning and mock station simulator. Covers assessment, planning, implementation, evaluation, clinical skills, values and evidence-based practice; these are independent practice materials, not official NMC stations.

Academic and professional safety

Clinical procedures require supervision, assessed competence and local policy. Regulatory rules change and must be checked on official NMC pages. These resources are pending Faizan’s editorial review, and they do not substitute for direct clinical supervision or official guidance.

Essential official starting points: NMC overseas registration; The NMC Code; Test of Competence.

UK nursing registration: eligibility, CBT, OSCE and English evidence

Internationally educated applicants should distinguish the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) registration process from preparation for the Test of Competence (ToC). The ToC includes a computer-based test (CBT) of knowledge and an objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) assessing practice-related skills. Whether an applicant must take the ToC depends on the NMC’s assessment of that application; completing study questions alone does not confer registration.

📋 Choose the correct NMC preparation guide
Your question What to check Related guide
Am I eligible to register? Initial eligibility, qualifications, identity and professional registration evidence. Overseas registration
How should I prepare for the CBT? Field-specific knowledge, test format and numeracy study. CBT preparation
What happens in an OSCE? Structured stations, assessment, planning, implementation, evaluation, communication and professional values. OSCE preparation
Which English evidence is accepted? Academic IELTS, OET, or another evidence route accepted under the current NMC rules. English language evidence
How do I maintain registration? The Code, continuing professional development, reflection and revalidation after registration. NMC revalidation

What should you do first? Read the official NMC step-by-step registration guidance and use its pre-application checklist before paying for preparation or tests. English-language evidence, identity verification, health and character declarations and professional indemnity requirements are distinct parts of the pathway. The NMC may update fees, evidence rules and test arrangements.

Choose the route that applies to you

For skill-focused revision alongside OSCE study, see the clinical procedures and nursing skills library, including hand hygiene, vital-signs assessment and medication-safety principles. Review current official NMC requirements separately.

Applying from outside the UK? Start with registration and English evidence. Preparing for tests? Study the field-specific CBT and OSCE guides, then check NMC materials. Already on the register? Use the Code and revalidation guides. Candidates should not treat a test-preparation article as evidence of registration or competence.
