This 18-credit, 5-subject study guide follows the 2024 Higher Education Commission BS Nursing curriculum for Pakistan. It explains what to study, how the subjects relate to practical nursing and how to revise. It is a student companion and not a substitute for university lectures, current policies or supervised clinical training.
The sixth semester develops nursing responses to social and psychological determinants of health. It also teaches how to plan education and interpret data responsibly, connecting individual care to community programmes.
Review status: Course sequence verified against the HEC curriculum; explanation and study examples prepared for academic checking by Faizan, BS Nursing.

Detailed subject learning plan
For each subject, understand the theory first, turn it into a small case-based question, and test whether you can explain the rationale without copying the notes.
Principles of Teaching & Learning
Develop specific learning objectives, understand health literacy, adapt instructions to an individual’s needs and use demonstration and teach-back to verify understanding. Education should respect readiness, culture and prior knowledge.
What to learn
Check your reasoning
How would you establish that a patient actually understands important discharge information?
Public Health Nursing
Connect health promotion, prevention, community assessment, equity and policy to local care. Ask how housing, income, service access, transport and language affect the feasibility of a programme before advocating a solution.
What to learn
Check your reasoning
Why might a well-designed intervention still fail when participants cannot reach the clinic?
Mental Health Nursing
Learn therapeutic communication, mental state observations, stigma-aware practice, recovery orientation and appropriate risk escalation. Screening and student observation do not amount to a definitive mental health diagnosis. Respect privacy while following safeguarding rules.
What to learn
Check your reasoning
Why is it unsafe for a student nurse to promise absolute secrecy in a potential safety crisis?
Introduction to Biostatistics (QR II)
Study numerical summaries, sampling, bias, uncertainty and evaluation of clinical claims. Use measures of central tendency and variation appropriately. A statistically significant finding does not automatically imply an important effect for individual patients.
What to learn
Check your reasoning
Why does a p-value alone not establish the clinical importance of an intervention?
Culture, Health & Society
Explore patient preferences, family networks, language, social inequity, discrimination and the influence of cultural context. Cultural sensitivity involves asking individuals about their needs rather than predicting behaviour from group identity.
What to learn
Check your reasoning
How can you ask about a care preference without making an assumption about someone’s culture?
Integrated student case
A distressed patient asks the student nurse to keep a safety-related concern secret. How can the learner listen supportively, explain confidentiality limits and involve qualified staff?
Suggested reasoning method
Start with accurate observations and patient-reported information. Compare with earlier status, identify essential missing data, consider patient dignity and immediate safety, and determine what requires a qualified clinician’s review. Use the local escalation pathway and document the information clearly. This is a discussion exercise, not authority to diagnose or treat.
